It took me till my big age of 45 to gather the courage to tackle it! I’ve always wanted to write about chronic migraines in fiction, but it’s a little too personal for me.

Trying to act like a normal person while attempting to manage outrageous pain - especially when it’s invisible and tough for a lot of people to even believe - has affected every aspect of my life, and especially relationships. TW: I’ve battled chronic, intractable daily migraines since I was in elementary school. KT: Eva’s ex-husband says something really tough to her when she’s suffering her intense migraines: “I wanted a wife, not a patient.” What inspired you to write a lead with chronic illness? Just an inexplicable connection that asks no questions, just is? Sure. It can be a platonic bestie, your cousin, a cat. Not to get too mystical about it, but I do think that soul mates are real and that they come in all forms. TW: I do! It’s happened to me a few times. Do you believe that some people really do find that? It doesn’t feel over the top or forced - it feels really … real. KT: When Shane and Eva are teenagers, they really seem to instantly click. $25 at Bookshop Credit: Grand Central Publishing I attribute it to growing up with really funny parents. And, for me, laughing at nonsense makes life more palatable. Life is nuts, and even the darkest parts can have an absurdist spin. I love to draw the humor out in almost everything. It’s actually hard for me to write anything in a super-straightforward, straight-faced way, which is one of the reasons I went into magazine writing instead of newspaper reporting.

KATIE TAMOLA: The book establishes a very authentically human and funny tone. Shondaland caught up with Williams to discuss Seven Days in June, second chances, balancing emotions in her writing, the limitless expectations of being a Black woman, and more. Things didn’t exactly end well, and what later unfurls is a engrossing story of reconnection, true love, genuine pain, and all the beautiful and hurtful things that make up a life in between. Shane is naturally intimidating with his poignant talent and GQ-esque face, but this run-in is also inherently unnerving for Eva since the two kind of fell in love with each other years ago when they were teenagers.

The book follows Eva, a brilliant, best-selling erotica author and amazing mother who is trying her best to juggle it all while also dealing with a chronic case of horrible migraines.
